MELANA
In 2009 I started to develop works that were made for public spaces. Theory now began to play a part in my artistic practice. I again started to learn by making and experimenting.
I developed a series of works entitled The practice of everyday life.
These practical works were focussed on knowing people’s opinions and reactions. The work dealt with Bertolt Brecht’s theory and practice of the theatre and the philosophy of Michel de Certeau.
Bertolt Brecht’s theory of Epic Theatre proposed that a play should not cause the spectator to identify emotionally with the performer, but should instead provoke rational self-reflection and a critical view of the action on the stage.
In his influential text ‘Walking in the City’, Michel de Certeau asserts that the city is generated by the strategies of governments, corporations, and other institutional bodies which produce things like maps that describe the city as a unified whole.
